| THE CALIFORNIA COWBOY IN THE LAND OF THE VAQUERO by David R. Stoecklein Cattlemen and cowboys are still are still prevalent in the modern-day Golden State, which has deep roots in some of America's oldest and most prestigious ranches. It is this reflection of the Old West that David Stoeklein captures in his photography, reminding us that there still is a future for the California ccowboy. Here to represent today's prosperous California cattleman are the Tejon, Corralitos, Five Dor, Estrella, Rancho Mission Viejo, Walking R, San Emigido, Russ Ranch & Timber Company, and Salinas Rodeo, among others. Insightful essays from Henry Schacht, Shirl Woodson and Ernie Morris complement Dave's photographs, offering historical and geographical context. This most recent leg of my journey to photograph the West was full of surprises. California is fantastically big, beautiful and inspiring. Big ranches - the biggest one just 60 miles from the Los Angeles airport - in a big state. It's a long way from Dorris, in Northern California, to the Jack Ranch down below Paso Robles. California has it all: Mountains, beaches, spectacular land … golden grass, emerald hills, majestic oak trees, Spanish moss, high mountains and gritty desert. Believe it or not, there is still much more open space than there are cities and towns. Just on the outskirts of great cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Monterey and Santa Barbara, and Eden of wildlife flourishes. Like state parks or refuges, the California ranches provide buffer zones between nature and the sprawling megapolis. The cattleman are still working today as their ancestors did, still struggling to keep their ranches intact - fighting heavy government regulations, taxes, poor cattle prices and lackof or overabundance of water, and pressure from developers. "Although ranching is still a big part of California business, it is changing quickly. I am thankful to have been able to preserve some snapshots of this proud time." David R. Stoecklein This beauiful hardcover book (12 in. x 11 in.) features over 250 pages in full color with the exquisite photography of David. R. Stoecklein showing the Vaquero at work in the most gorgeous California Landscapes. Editorial chapters about the history of the California Vaquero, the California South Coast, the Sierra Nevada and all other regions of California where the Vaquero still is practicing his art complement the great photographic pictures of California. This book will be a Classic in your collection! |
