To give the reader some insight on the subject of Hardy Oelke's book, we are publishing parts of the Preface, written by the Author.

...In my research for my book on the American Quarter Horse, when studying the origin of this breed, I could not help but trace back to its Iberian ancestors.

To observe some American mustangs in the wild had always been a dream of mine. ...It was not until the late 1980's that I managed to lay my eyes on some of these elusive creatures in Nevada, and it happened more by chance than by design.

Then I had heard of the Kiger Mustangs... I was not prepared for the similarity of some of the Kiger Mustangs to the Sorraias in Portugal, which I at that time knew only from pictures, but I knew about the struggle in Europe to keep a valid Sorraia population going.

...Later, I found the same form of horse among mustang populations in Utah, Neveda and Wyoming, and was worried that everywhere, horses of this precious kind were adopted out to unknowing [ed] people, just like any other feral horses.

This book is, along with articles that were published, an attempt to make the public aware of this situation, and hopefully gain support for a preservation program for the Sorraia mustang. ...It is my sincere hope that this book will create interest and understanding for these threatened horses of ancient origin and stimulates activity for their preservation.
